    In Sandoval County:
    MLA reported 30 FRANKLIN’S GULLS in a field at Peña
    Blanca on Arroyo Leyba Road past the Enchanted Farm sign
    on April 24. On April 25 PF had a WHIMBREL with the
    gulls.

    In Santa Fe County:
    PN had a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW at his home on the north
    side of Edgewood on April 24.

    In San Miguel County:
    TT had a male PYRRHULOXIA on the west side road at the
    Las Vegas Refuge on April 26. At the refuge at Brown’s
    Marsh JA on April 20 saw a GREAT EGRET.
    BW reported an adult BROAD-WINGED HAWK over Monastery
    Lake near Pecos on April 24.

    In Guadalupe County:
    JP reported a PEREGRINE in Santa Rosa on April 27.

    In Roosevelt County:
    JP had a CASSIN’S VIREO in Milnesand on April 25.
    At the migrant trap west of Melrose JP, JO, WW, and LL
    saw a TOWNSEND’S WARBLER and a DUSKY FLYCATCHER on April
    25. JP, WW, and JB on April 27 had the Townsend’s and a
    POORWILL.
    JP reported three CHIMNEY SWIFTS at Portales on April 25.

    In Curry County:
    At the Clovis Sewage Ponds be sure to tell them that you
    are there to bird. JP, JO, WW, and LL found a WILLET on
    April 25.
    JP and WW on April 26 found five MISSISSIPPI KITES in
    Clovis.
    They had two GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS near Broadview on April
    27.

    In Cibola County:
    CJG had at the El Morro NM on April 26 his first BROAD-
    TAILED HUMMINGBIRD. He had an OSPREY flying over the
    Continental Divide.

    In Bernalillo County:
    DP on April 27 found a NORTHERN PARULA and a female ROSE-
    BREASTED GROSBEAK in the San Antonio Open Space behind
    the San Antonio Church on NM 14 a few hundred yards up
    the trail. The Parula was found later by JJ, but not the
    grosbeak.
    At the Alameda Bridge in Albuquerque JJ on April 25 had a
    STELLER’S JAY.
    CW, MB, and NP discovered a WHITE-TAILED KITE on April 5
    in the area of the Open Space Offices. CP saw it on
    April 18.
    At the Rio Grande Nature Center JJ on April 27 saw a
    SOLITARY SANDPIPER on the parking lot pond and a GRAY
    FLYCATCHER at the Herb Garden.
    JP on April 20 found four WILLETS at the Tramway Wet-
    lands. JJ on April 26 saw 19 Willets present. CW on
    April 20 found that due to the earlier dredging there was
    lots of water and no mudflats.
    CB on April 27 saw a TOWNSEND’S WARBLER in Albuquerque’s
    Altura Park.
    BG on April 30 has a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in his yard in the Albuquerque North Valley near the Alameda Bridge.

    In Socorro County:
    At the Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio on April
    19 DC found ten WHITE-FRONTED GEESE on the Seasonal Road
    and a GLOSSY IBIS at the south end of the Marsh Loop. DC
    on April 23 had the glossy ibis, the SNOWY PLOVER, and
    two STILT SANDPIPERS. LN reported a PEREGRINE at the
    Flight Deck with a SCOTT’S ORIOLE at the Quail Pond on
    April 23. On April 27 BV had a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER
    white-lored) and 18 WILLETS on the seasonal road, while
    CB saw the willets, a LONG-BILLED CURLEW, ten MARBLED
    GODWITS, and the Snowy Plover. He had a western PALM
    WARBLER on the seasonal road. DP on April 29 saw the
    geese, male VERMILION FLYCATCHER near the Willow Deck,
    and two SCOTT’S ORIOLE at the headquarters. He did not
    find the YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER. [RV and MH on April 29
    also missed the YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, but did see a
    “scuffy” male YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON near the
    entrance to the seasonal road. And on April 30 DC had
    the ten white-fronted geese and the glossy ibis still in
    the same places. He also had a MOORHEN at the ditch
    where the one way road ends on the Farm Loop. High
    counts were 948 Dowitchers and 1653 WILSON’S PHALAROPES.
    At Turtle Bay Park on the NMTU campus in Socorro on April
    27 JS reported two male INDIGO BUNTINGS, when CB had four
    of the buntings with MYRTLE WARBLERS, while BV reported
    two male and a female indigos. DP on April 29 saw four
    male INDIGO BUNTINGS with 50 WHITE PELICANS flying over
    the river on April 28.
    JO at his home near Luis Lopez south of Socorro on April
    27 had a WOOD DUCK and a TOWNSEND’S WARBLER.

    In Chaves County:
    JSa on April 16 reported four AMERICAN BITTERNS on Unit 6
    and one on Unit 15. RV, MH, and BT on April 19 saw a
    hybrid GLOSSY X WHITE-FACED IBIS on Unit 16. JH on April
    23 had several singing CASSIN’S SPARROWS at the Goose
    Hill Overlook.
    JSa in the refuge report for April 28 recorded one
    bittern, two FRANKLIN’S GULLS, three MARBLED GODWITS, a
    STILT SANDPIPER, two SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, a SNOW
    GOOSE still present, one MISSISSIPPI KITE, two
    PEREGRINES, with high counts of 315 ibis, 317 dowitchers,
    and 1667 Wilson’s Phalaropes. JH on April 30 had 24
    WILLETS on Unit 3 and 20 FRANKLIN’S GULLS on Unit 16 on
    April 29.
    RM on April 26 was apparently the person reporting the
    REDDISH EGRET at the refuge on Unit 15, plus two AMERICAN
    BITTERNS.
    CT on April 5 found up to 50 LESSER PRAIRIE CHICKENS in
    the Mesacalero Sands leks near the Waldrop Rest Stop 40
    miles east of Roswell on US380. JH on April 19 had 20
    at the lek, plus four SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS in the
    rest stop area. MH, SNC, AM and LG on April 19 had about
    25 chickens.
    The RV group at the Waldrop rest saw an ORANGE-CROWNED
    WARBLER, the flycatchers, and a BARN OWL.

    In Sierra County:
    DC found a male VARIED THRUSH at the Paseo del Rio park
    below Elephant Butte dam on April 25 between the two
    ponds and the river. JL on April 23 had a GRAY FLY-
    CATCHER there.
    DC on April 26 at Emory Pass in the Black Range saw an
    OLIVE WARBLER with a HUTTON’S VIREO and a RED-FACED
    WARBLER on the switchbacks to the east. In Kingston he
    had a PAINTED REDSTART and a BRIDLED TITMOUSE. On Forest
    Road 157 there was two BLACK-CHINNED SPARROWS and an
    ACORN WOODPECKER.
    At Percha Dam State Park on April 21 DC had a TOWNSEND’S
    WARBLER and a DUSKY FLYCATCHER. JL on April 21 saw a
    male SCOTT’S ORIOLE; and on April 28 a GREEN HERON,
    CASSIN’S VIREO, and a female AMERICAN REDSTART. On April
    28 he had north of Percha Dam a TOWNSEND’S WARBLER, a
    HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER, and two WOOD DUCKS.
    DP on April 29 at Percha Dam saw a male HOODED WARBLER
    along the river at the north end. DC saw the Hooded
    Warbler male on April 26.
    At Elephant Butte SP DC saw a LONG-BILLED CURLEW, eight
    WILLETS, and a SANDERLING on April 23. He saw a SNOWY
    PLOVER and 15 MARBLED GODWITS there on April 25.
    DC at the Luchini Trail near the Elephant Lake h.q. had
    three BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHERS on April 23.
    At the Lions Beach Campground DC on April 23 he had three
    gnatcatchers and a male TOWNSEND’S WARBLER.
    JL at his home saw CEDAR WAXWINGS, a BROAD-TAILED
    HUMMINGBIRD, male SCOTT’S ORIOLE on April 28, and PINE
    SISKINS.

    In Grant County:
    FL on April 17 had a male MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD at the
    Spirit Canyon Lodge at Lake Roberts.
    In the Burro Mountains south of Silver City on Jack’s
    Peak DG on April 18 had an adult GOSHAWK, a pair of
    MONTEZUMA QUAIL, a few OLIVE WARBLERS, and four
    YELLOW-EYED JUNCOS.
    The Hummingbird Festival at Lake Roberts has been
    canceled this year.

    In Hidalgo County:
    RS on April 30 recorded a BLACK HAWK on Hwy. 92 south of
    Virden.
    County Hwy.1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray)
    Ranch. Because of events with thoughtless birders, one
    must NOT go off the road.

    In Doña Ana County:
    KS and SH on April 19 at the Mesilla Valley Bosque SP
    found a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER (photos) just north of
    the visitor center.
    JN on April 23 saw three WOOD DUCKs, three GREEN HERONS
    and a CASSIN’S VIREO at the Mesilla Dam. On April 24 he
    saw a DUSKY FLYCATCHER, SORA, and two SWAMP SPARROWS.
    JG on April 20 saw a dark morph BROAD-WINGED HAWK in
    Mesilla Park.
    At their home near Radium Springs MS recorded a pair of
    HOODED OIOLES and up to 40 BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRDS.
    On April 16 at her Las Cruces home LS had a HOODED
    ORIOLE. She still had the male on April 28.

    In Otero County:
    On Otero Mesa on April 28 DG reported quite a few
    migrating BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS. At Stone Well he has
    seen MYRTLE WARBLER, DUSKY and WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, and
    LINCOLN’S SPARROW.
    At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the lakes are open
    to birding, but permission is needed from Holloman AF
    Base to bird the Lake G area to the north.
    JN on April 19 saw over 300 WILSON’S PHALAROPES with one
    ‘ratty’ male RED-NECKED PHALAROPE.
    On April 19 JN at the White Sands NM saw a male VERMILION
    FLYCATCHER, a GRAY and a WILLOW FLYCATCHER.

    In Eddy County:
    RM on April 26 at Brantley Lake had a male PROTHONOTARY
    WARBLER, but missed the one at Rattlesnake springs.
    SW at the Loving Sewage Ponds on April 21 had a BLACK-
    BELLIED PLOVER.
    At Brantley Lake on April 19 MH, BT, and RV had WILLETS
    and MARBLED GODWITS. JP reported only a PEREGRINE on
    April 25. On April 26 he saw a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER
    and a FORSTER’S TERN.
    At Rattlesnake Springs SW on April 22 found a DUSKY-
    CAPPED FLYCATCHER and a GRAY HAWK. On April 22 DG had
    a WORM-EATING WARBLER near the chinaberry grove, the gray
    hawk, and a GRAY FLYCATCHER. JP, JO, WW, and LL on April
    26 saw a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER in the desert near
    the rest rooms, a NASHVILLE WARBLER, and the hawk with at
    the adjacent Washington Ranch a male INDIGO BUNTING, a
    pair of CASSIN’S FINCHES, a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and a
    SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER.
    RN had his first two CHIMHEY SWIFTS over his Carlsbad
    home on April 25.

    In Lea County:
    JO had a LONG-BILLED THRASHER along NM 206 at Crossroads
    on April 25 (photo). Later on April 25 it was seen by
    JP, WW, and LL. RV, BT, and CW did not find it on April
    26.
    JP reported an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER in Tatum on April
    25.
    At the sewage ponds in Tatum on April 26 RV, BT, CW, MB,
    NP, and JB had a NORTHERTN PARULA, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH,
    CASSIN'S VIREO and a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.

    Field Trips:

    Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips.
    May 8-9 ia their Birdathon;
    on May 15 to Hondo Canyon in the southern Sandias with
    Mary Lou Arthur, 299-2565.

    On Saturday, May 3, Dave Cleary will lead a hike as a
    pre-Sierra Co. Count (May 10). Meet at Paseo del Rio
    Park at 7:30 a.m. They will check Percha Dam, Caballo
    Lake, Riverside Park, and Animas Canyon. Contact Dave

    Sangre de Cristo Audubon will have a weekend trip to
    Carlsbad on May 2 to 4 birding at Rattlesnake Springs,
    Sitting Bull Falls, and the Guadalupe Mts. Contact is

    Saturday, May 10 is North American Bird Count Day for
    each county. Contact the leader of your county. To

    The Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque has Saturday
    and Sunday morning hikes at 8:30 a.m. through May. There is a parking fee.

    The Randall Davey Audubon Center in Santa Fe on Upper
    Canyon Road has Saturday morning bird walks beginning at
    8:30 until 9:30.
